What Is a Wound Care Center and Who Needs It?
Most of us are used to getting a cut or scrape and having it heal up without any problem. When we were kids we might run into the house with a bruised knee. Mom would probably wash it out, put a Band-Aid on it, dry our tears and that would be that. We'd soon forget about it and a week later it be completely healed.
Kids heal quickly. For that matter, so do most adults. However, that isn't true for everyone. Some people have major difficulty healing of wounds. This is usually because they have serious medical problems that block the bodies normal ability to heal.
For example, diabetes is well known to interfere with a wound healing. Since all the raw materials required for fighting off infection and healing are supplied by the bloodstream it makes sense that anything interfering with blood flow can slow healing. Hardening of the arteries and heart disease are common sources of this type of problem.
People that have massive swelling of their legs often have difficulty healing a wound on their leg. In fact, in some people the swelling is so severe that the skin breaks down and a wound opens up because of the swelling along.
These are only some of the problems that can prevent a wound from healing.
When it comes to dealing with a wound, there is a range of responses that varies with the severity of the wound, how long it's been there and any other medical problems the person may have.
A healthy person with a minor cut will most likely take care of that themselves. If the cut looks more severe or like it might need sutures they're probably have a doctor check it out. Someone with diabetes or another severe medical problem would be wise to have even relatively minor wounds checked by a physician.
Sometimes, however, a person with a problem wound can visit their doctor, follow all the instructions they are given, and still have a wound that's not healing. That's where a wound care center comes it.
As in many areas, wound care has become a specialty within medicine. A wound care center will have both the staff (physicians, nurses, technicians and supporting staff) and equipment needed to provide the best possible wound care. As you might expect, since all they do is treat wounds they get pretty good at it.
In addition, there are some treatment modalities that require equipment that most physicians just don't have available. After all, it doesn't make much sense to invest tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment if you only going to use it a couple times a year.
So to answer the question "what is a wound care center and who needs one", a wound care center is a practice that focuses on helping people with poorly healing wounds. Anyone who has a wound that has not responded to treatment prescribed by the primary caregiver or who has medical problems that make wound healing more difficult should consider requesting referral to a wound care center.
An example of such a premier practice is the wound care center in Syracuse NY. This center achieves healing in over 85% of their patients (and remember that almost everyone they see as a treated elsewhere for months without success). You can find out more about the center and the techniques they use at:

Multivitamin Intake: Improved Longevity or Premature Mortality?
Epidemiological studies have shown that eating foods rich in antioxidants results in a reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes and cancer. Antioxidants reduce damaging oxidative stress caused by highly active free radicals in the blood. These detrimental effects have been implicated as a pathogenic factor in most diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Antioxidant rich foods include fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. Phytochemicals are strong antioxidants and are naturally present in these foods. For example, soybeans contain genisten, tomatoes and grapefruit contain lycopene, cabbage and brussel sprouts cotain indoles, garlic and onion contain allylic sulfides, tea contains tannins and most fruits and vegetables are rich in flavonoids. A diet rich in these foods is highly protective. This observation has led to the widespread use of synthetic multivitamins and anti-oxidants to prevent cancer and cardiovascular diseases, and increase life span. However taking these supplements have not shown protective benefits, and have actually been harmful in most people.
Dr. Jaakko Mursu and collegues recently presented disturbing data regarding life expentancy with the use of multivitamins and mineral supplements in healthy older women. They found that most supplements in older women were associated with a higher risk of total mortality. These supplements included multivitamins, vitamin B6, folic acid, and minerals such as iron, magnesium, zinc and copper. There was a 3% to 6% increased risk of death with taking vitamin B6, folic acid, iron, magnesium, and zinc supplements and an 18.0% increased risk for total mortality with copper supplementation. The increased rates appear when compared to individuals not taking these supplements. This large study involved a total of 38,772 older women, between the ages of 55 to 69 years. Their results were published in the October 10, 2011 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
In an earlier review of 47 studies involving nearly 181,000 participants, Bjelakovic and colleagues reported that taking vitamin A supplements increased the risk of death by 16%, beta-carotene by 7%, and vitamin E by 4%. These findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2007.
Meta-analysis of several studies have also documented that antioxidants do not prevent cancer. On the contrary, studies have implicated their intake with a higher incidence of some cancers. In a study by Lawson and associates and published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in 2007, the risk of fatal prostate cancer doubled in men who took multivitamins seven days a week, when compared with men who did not take any multivitamin supplements. Their study involed 295,344 men enrolled in the National Institutes of Health Diet and Health Study. Other studies have shown that mortality also appears to be increased in persons with gastrointestinal and lung cancers while ingesting anti-oxidant supplements.
The exact mechanism behind this harmful effect of multivitamin/anti-oxidant supplementation is not clear. It has been suggested that supplemental antioxidants may decrease free radicals and upset defensive mechanisms necessary to destroy precancerous and cancerous cells. Synthetic antioxidants may also possess pro-oxidant properties.
The American diet provides almost 120% the recommended daily allowances for β-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Except for calcium and prescribed supplementation for documented deficiency (for example Vitamin D), scientific data suggests that most multivitamins and mineral supplements should not be used in otherwise well nourished individuals.

Constipation Is Common Also Among Children
If you start having less bowel movements or your stools develop into hard to pass, there is a chance that you are actually suffering from constipation. The condition can certainly be very bothersome and it can provoke troubles to people of all ages, featuring kids as well.
Constipation in children is essentially induced by withholding of stool by the kid. This might possibly be brought about by a number of reasons that consist of embarrassment to relieve oneself, potty or toilet training anxiety, unwillingness to disrupt playtime, or concern of possessing a painful encounter while passing out stool.
If a child delays his or her bowel movements it produces stool to get dry as well as harder. This can certainly make future bowel movements quite painful. In some cases this can lead to even an obstruction in the colon or rectum.
In these types of situations it is possible that the child's underpants are stained due to sudden leakage. From time to time this is incorrectly interpreted as a diarrhea.
Other causes of constipation in kids consist of low fiber diet, unique drugs or prescriptions i.e. opiates, antacids and antidepressants, anatomic abnormalities and particular diseases such as diabetes and Down syndrome.
Signs or Symptoms
- Restrained movements of the child than normal
- Affliction or discomfort in the abdomen
- Loss of appetite
- Unwillingness to pot instruction or avoiding toilet visits
- Blood stains on the toilet paper after a toilet visit
- Vast, dry and hard stools
- Difficult or painful movements of the bowel
- Existence of stool in the inner wear or staining
- Characteristic postures by the child that point towards withholding of stool, for example, scrunching of the buttocks muscles or tip-toeing and then crossing the backs of the heels or any additional unusual movement or behavior.
Treatment Options
There are actually a number of methods in which constipation in children can be cured, yet it is important to note that treatment is dependent on the ruthlessness of the complication. Some of the methods in which the little one can easily be treated consist of:
Pharmaceutical
Laxatives are one choice to treat constipation. However, it is crucial to use laxatives in kids only when a general practitioner prescribes them.
Eating Habits
Make certain that your kid drinks adequate water, juice or some other liquid. Additionally, in order to obtain sufficient fiber, incorporate to his or her diet lots of fresh veges, fruits, along with other high fiber food stuffs. Adjusting your child's diet is one of the best natural remedies for constipation.
Bowel Training
The kid ought to be trained to relieve himself or herself every time he or she obtains a bowel movement urge. The kid can certainly be trained to invest at the very least ten minutes in the toilet every day after a particular meal. The child should be made comfortable while sitting on the bowl of the toilet by having the legs firmly resting on the ground and then he or she should be made to unwind totally.
Rewarding
The kid can easily be rewarded every time she or he sits on the toilet and whenever they obtain a bowel movement, they need to be praised as well as rewarded.
Do you or your child suffer from severe constipation? Luckily, there a lot of home remedies for constipation that can offer relief from the condition.

Fight Cancer And More With These Hydroxycinnamic Acids
The hydroxycinnamic acids are a group of plant based nutrients that can be found in coffee, various fruits and various vegetables. They are not believed to be essential in humans but research has revealed that they can reduce oxygen related damage, keep your body safe from harmful diseases, protect against unnecessary inflammation and much more. In this article I will be looking at 2 key phenolic acids, discussing the richest food sources and providing an overview of their main health benefits.
1) CAFFEIC ACID:
Coffee is the richest food source of caffeic acid with a 10 millilitre (ml) serving supplying you with between 18 milligrams (mg) and 88mg of this hydroxycinnamic acid (depending on the quality of coffee beans used). Some other good food sources of this hydroxycinnamic acid include apples, basil, cauliflowers, oregano, radishes and turnips.
In terms of health benefits, caffeic acid is a powerful anti-inflammatory (a substance that keeps your body's cells safe from unpleasant inflammation) and antioxidant (a substance that keeps your body's cells safe from nasty free radicals). It can also protect your body from a number of nasty health disorders including cancer (a health disorder that leads to your body's cells growing in a rapid, out of control way) and diabetes (a health disorder that causes your blood glucose levels to become extremely high).
2) COUMARIN:
Coumarin can be sourced from apricots, cinnamon, strawberries and tonka beans. Currently, this hydroxycinnamic acid has no confirmed health benefits. Early evidence has shown that it may act as an analgesic (a substance that reduces pain), anticoagulant (a substance that prevents blood clotting), anti-inflammatory (a substance that reduces unnecessary inflammation in the body) and antiseptic (a substance that inhibits the growth of disease causing microorganisms). Additionally, it may fight cancer, fight osteoporosis (reduced bone mineral density), lower high blood pressure and treat asthma (a health disorder that makes it difficult to breathe). However, further research is required before these potential coumarin health benefits can be confirmed.
HYDROXYCINNAMIC ACIDS SUMMARY:
There is still a lot more to learn about caffeic acid and coumarin. However, the provisional evidence on these hydroxycinnamic acids shows that they have a lot of potential and indicates that these natural nutrients may keep the body safe from various diseases and health disorders. So when it comes to food make sure you are eating lots of natural fruits and vegetables. Also when you feel a little thirsty do not stick to just water and green tea - make sure you drink a cup of coffee or 2 as well. By taking this advice you can supply your body with a healthy dose of these hydroxycinnamic acids.

Nail Salon Air Purifiers - 5 Features That Will Make Them Effective
Nail salon air can become unhealthy once chemicals from nail polish, remover, and hardener go airborne and stay there. An effective cleaner should have the 5 features below if it is to make a noticeable difference in how your air smells.
Carbon Filter For Chemicals - This is an essential component. It is recognized as the best type of filter to remove gaseous pollutants including odors and volatile organic chemicals that many salon products emit. Using a cleaner that can effectively absorb chemicals and remove them from the air is one of the most important things to look for in the technical specifications and/or the owner's manual.
HEPA Filtration - HEPA is the term that results from the first letters of high efficiency particle arresting filter. This technology is the best for removing airborne particles. Any indoor space has particulates in the air such as dust, mold and mildew spores, season pollen, bacteria, viruses, and even pet dander brought in by customers who own warm-blooded pets.
Add thousands of pieces of minute pieces of nails that go airborne with grinding and filing and the air can become thick pretty quick. Air thick with particles is unhealthy as well and being able to remove them will keep your air fresh and healthy.
Permanent Split Capacitor Motor - This type of motor is designed to run safely and continuously. Designed for high revolutions per minute (RPM), it doesn't need to be cut off for a certain number of hours each day.
Not having to remember to turn the cleaner on and off means that the air can be filtered continually and the benefit is that the air clean in your shop all the time. Being able to let it filter the air in your salon each night insures that you and your customers walk in to a shop that smells clean and fresh each morning.
Wheels - Air cleaners filter the air that is closest to them first. Sometimes when there is a particularly smelly procedure, it's great to be able to easily roll the purifier closer so that the pollutants that go into the air are removed as quickly as possible. Sturdy wheels on the unit make it easy to roll over all types of flooring.
Variable Filtration Rate - This is invaluable option to have during the busiest time such as evenings and weekends. Doing a lot of manicures and pedicures can make the air smell really awful. Being able to pull air in faster will help remove the chemicals more quickly and limit the amount available to be inhaled. And when the air smells fresh again, it's handy to be able to adjust the filtration speed to medium or low.
Remove unhealthy chemical fumes and particles from your salon air with the Nail Salon Air Purifier from PurerAir.com at http://purerair.com/nails.html.

A Chiropractic Approach to Restless Leg Syndrome
Restless Leg Syndrome is a condition where people have an irresistible urge to move their legs and feet, especially when they go to bed at night. It is also classified as a sleep disorder because people have difficulty sleeping because of the symptoms and irritability associated with it. People describe it as an uncomfortable, creepy crawly feeling in their legs. They also often describe having numbness and tingling in their legs and feet.
It is believed that irritation to the nervous system may be the main cause of this syndrome. Certain diseases that include irritation to the nervous syndrome such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease and peripheral neuropathy often include restless leg syndrome.
There is no specific test to diagnose restless leg syndrome. Diagnosis is usually made from the patient's answer to questions relating to their symptoms, family history, sleep deprivation and medication use. Other diseases or conditions are usually ruled out first.
Lifestyle changes have been found to be beneficial in helping those with restless leg syndrome. These include a regular exercise program including muscle strengthening and exercises. It is especially important to do stretches and strengthening of the low back and pelvis as these have found to be the most helpful.
Since sleep deprivation is correlated with restless leg syndrome, helping people to establish regular sleeping patterns has been shown to be beneficial. It is important to go to bed at the same time each day as much as possible. Avoiding caffeine, tobacco and alcohol has also been shown to be beneficial.
Chiropractors have specific training in the biomechanics of the body and the nervous system. People with restless leg syndrome report great improvement with chiropractic care. Chiropractors help by performing specific adjustments to help stabilize the pelvis and low back. Chiropractors can also prescribe stretches and strengthening exercises for the low back and pelvis.
They can also perform therapeutic modalities to help relax muscles in the low back and legs which are often affected with restless leg syndrome. These modalities might include electric muscle stimulation, Vibromassage or ultrasound. Electric muscle stimulation works to fatigue tight muscles in the low back or other areas of the body. Ultrasound can help to decrease inflammation. Vibromassage is often used to help relax the muscles and help to stimulate blood flow to the area. Cold laser therapy is a newer therapeutic modality which has also shown to be effective. Chiropractic should be considered as an effective approach to restless leg syndrome.

Ways to Treat a Cold Sore Properly
Cold sores can be painful and embarrassing. If you are looking for a quick and easy remedy for a cold sore, there are several options. The best way to handle a canker is to prevent them from occurring in the first place.
Get a New Toothbrush
A toothbrush can actually carry a cold sore virus if you used it while you previously had a cold sore. As such, it is important that you regularly change your toothbrush to ensure the most sanitary hygiene tool. If you are sure that your toothbrush came in contact with a cold sore, toss it immediately. Saving a couple bucks isn't worth risking another cold sore or two.
Lip Protection
Fever blister can be caused by the sun. Don't forget to apply sunscreen to your lips if you intend on being out in the sun for long periods of time. Just like the rest of your skin, your lips require protection from the elements.
Hands Off
If you feel a canker sore coming on or already have one, keep your hands away from it. Touching it, squeezing it or picking at it can just cause it to spread. Canker sores are extremely contagious so don't risk passing it on through physical contact or through sharing items like water bottles or lip balm. Always keep some hand sanitizer nearby in case you do accidentally touch your canker.
Pop a Pill
Over the counter pain killers can help you deal with the pain associated with the canker sores. If you simply can't handle the soreness, take a pain killer. Remember to only take the recommended dosage as directed on the bottle. Do not exceed this recommended dosage.
Ice it Up
Ice can also help you cope with the pain of a fever blister. In addition to numbing the pain, it can actually decrease the amount of time a fever blister appears if placed on the affected area at the first sign of a cold sore.
Got Milk?
Milk has many health benefits but this one doesn't involve drinking it. Soak a cotton swab in milk and place it on the affected area. This will not only help reduce pain, but like ice, it can also help decrease how long the cold sore sticks around.
Chill Out
Stress is another cause of the sores. When they are not causing you pain on the surface, they are hanging around waiting for the best time to rear their ugly heads. Usually, this is in high stress situations. This is why you may often get fever blister at times you least want them like before a big social or work event. Stress is a trigger so by keeping your stress levels down, you can actually lessen the appearance of canker sores.
Stay Healthy
Like any virus, the sores thrive when your body is at its weakest. By keeping yourself healthy and your immune system at its best you can help keep the virus at bay. Keep your diet balanced and healthy and you'll see the difference on the surface.

A Quick Look at Urgent Care Locations
Life is quite unpredictable, and it is difficult to predict the likelihood of an accident occurring or a specific physical ailment that requires urgent care. Knowing where you can turn to in the event that you need urgent medical care could even mean the difference between life and death in some more extreme situations, and this is why it is important to have a list of urgent care locations on hand just in case something bad were to happen - that way you would know exactly where to go in the event of a serious accident.
There are plenty of different ways to get urgent medical care, but you should remember that medical care can sometimes be quite expensive. This is especially the case if a considerable amount of treatment is required or if there is a specific kind of surgery that must be performed on the patient. It is therefore quite important to always have access to good health insurance if you can get it, but if not, be prepared to pay a considerable sum of money if you have to. Some clinics might offer specially priced services, and it is not like all clinics are offering the same prices anyway.
If you are looking for urgent care specifically, then you might want to try running a search for all of the clinics in your area that offer these special services. A search online should be enough land you with a variety of prospects, but some further research might be needed to make sure that the clinic you are ultimately going to choose is the best one for you. Do not be afraid to ask questions from the clinic, because it is important to have all of the details thought out.
You want to know exactly what you are getting into, so that you know how much you would have to pay in the event of an emergency. Don't leave it all up to those running the clinic, because you certainly do not want to be caught unaware with a six figure medical bill any time in the near future if you can help it. As is the case with most long term contracts or agreements, it is advisable to spend a reasonable amount of time researching your different options with medical care, because this way you will find the urgent care that is most appropriate for you as a person.
If you are uncertain about how to go about choosing a good health plan, you might want to try doing some further research online or asking someone you know who is qualified in this department. Sometimes when you do not know exactly what kind of urgent care to acquire, asking for advice from someone who does could certainly be a good idea. There are a lot of ways to get information on urgent care locations, and running an online search is probably one of the easiest methods that you can select.

In sad cases people forget about taking care of their health and fall into a self destructive lifestyle. Eating cheese-burgers Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays might be okay with you but eventually it can affect your body and heart. I'm not saying you shouldn't eat a cheese-burger at all, just try reducing the amount of fast food you consume every month. You will feel better, guarantee. Our body doesn't really need all that grease and fat, instead a good home made banana milkshake (not from McDonald) along with some oatmeal can really give natural energy to your body, which will put you in a good mood.

If you have a dog perhaps you should consider walking him everyday for at least 10-15 minutes. Even better you should definitely jog for a little bit and take the dog with you, so you won't be the only one running. Many of us might feel lazy at times, but that's completely normal. As long as you don't feel lazy all the time, then my friend you have a problem. Get up from the couch, bed or from whatever you're laying on and do some physical activity for at least 10-15 minutes everyday. It shouldn't be a challenge. For example do jumping jacks for about 5 minutes and then do squads for about 4 or 5 minutes, then stretch your body, legs and arms to finish up you're daily 15 minutes workout. Of course I would really recommend you to do a bit more than that. It doesn't need to be done everyday, make yourself a schedule for a work out routine. For example Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays you got to the Gym for about an hour or two. Even if you can't afford the Gym, there is many home workouts you can perform.
Got kids?

How Does the Muscular System Work In Conjunction With The Immune System?
The muscles connect the bones of the skeletal system and it is one of their main functions. As the muscles contract they move the bones. However, muscles also have other minor functions which are not that well-known. They help in increasing the body fluids, like blood and lymph. The muscular system also helps to improve the immunity in the body.
The immune system is one of the most complex and diverse systems in the human body. It protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks. It works with the white blood cells, and the organs that produce it. In a book entitled "Anatomy and Physiology," authored by Dr. Gary Thibodeau, it is mentioned that lymph nodes play a very important role in the immune system. The blood passes through spleen, which is a warehouse of cells. The lymph nodes filter the lymphatic fluid and contain immune cells.
Lymphatic fluid is light yellow in color, is the liquid in our blood. The main consistency for the fluid comes from dissolved sugars and salts. It does not contain proteins or cells required by the body. Lymphatic fluid is formed when the blood vessels leak fluids into the blood stream. The lymphatic nodes filter this fluid. Then it is sent back into the capillaries. The fluid that does not enter into the capillaries is sent back into the lymphatic system.
One of the main problems with blood circulation is the wrong posture that most people sit in. The heart is located at the upper portion of the body. The blood that is returning to the heart has to flow upwards against gravity. The capillaries create pressure and push the blood upwards. The lymphatic fluid too has to go through the same system of circulation. The muscular system plays a very valuable role in sending these fluids upwards. They squeeze the lymph upwards so that the fluid is kept circulating and the lymphatic system functions efficiently.
Lymphatic flow of fluids is very important for circulation and immune system. It helps the fluid travel throughout the body. The lymphatic fluid re-enters the blood through the lymphatic nodes and here it is checked for immune cells and possible bacteria or viruses. If lymphatic nodes are not functioning properly, they decrease the immunity of a person, making him/her more susceptible to illnesses. Lymph also plays an important role in circulation because if it did not return the blood, the volume of blood in the body will be affected.

How Laser Hair Removal Is Done
Laser hair removal from Boston to the Bahamas can be a wonderful procedure for people who do not like having much hair on their faces or bodies. The ways in which people can get rid of too much pilosity are many. The procedure is done by using a beam of light that affects the follicles. Even if the procedure can be painful rarely, there are no real reasons for it to cause pain. The main advantage of the procedure is its permanent effect and the technician who handles the operation is responsible for the results.
There are many classical ways of taking down the follicles, which can be annoying. Regular methods may be good to apply, but their effects are only temporary. Some of the methods which do not involve laser can be: waxing, shaving, or electrolysis. The method that uses laser may not be recommended for anyone. Before trying anything, people must inform themselves about how the procedure works.
With the aid of an invisible beam and a constant heat source, the follicles are destroyed from their rots and the skin around them is not affected at all. What is actually targeted and destroyed is the melanin, which is a component of dark color follicles. The procedure has more success if it is applied in the anagen phase, which is the phase of active growth for a follicle. Eighty five percent of a human lifetime belongs to an anagen phase.
The treatment does not work on any individual, but only on those who have dark hair and fair skin. Because melanin is a substance that can also be part of the epidermal tissue, people with dark skin are not suitable for the procedure. The beam of light used in the treatment is attracted only by the dark in the follicles, so blond or red-headed people cannot apply.
The modern method which uses light beams is effective, precise, cost efficient and permanent. In order to avoid the irritations that could appear because of eliminating the roots, the skin should be cooled with the use of a special gel, spray, or any other cooling device. Irritations can cause pains, but in most cases, the patient may not feel anything.
The overall success of a laser removal session usually depends on the knowledge and the skill of the person who handles the beam. The techniques that are used must guarantee the patient two things: efficiency and comfort. There are three factors which can determine how the beam may work: pulse, time and fluency.
The safest devices are those that use a long pulse. The fluency and energy levels of the beam are used according to the skin type of each individual. The technician allows the patient to have breaks between every pulse of light, so the skin can be cooled and the pains avoided.
Applying for laser hair removal in Boston may not be painful at all. People who no longer want to have pilosity on their skin can use a procedure through which the roots of their follicles are destroyed. A permanent treatment can be assured, but multiple sessions may be needed.
As demand for Laser Hair Removal Boston, Skin Rejuvenation, IPL Photofacials, Electrolysis, Micro-dermabrasion, BOTOX, Collagen, Restylane, Radiesse and Chemical Peels grow, The Laser & Skin Care Center in Baldwin Park II in Woburn, MA continues to lead the industry in delivering faster, more effective and affordable treatments on the market today.

Contact Lenses Or Eyeglasses?
Once it has been determined that you have a vision problem, the inevitable question is bound to surface: is it going to be contact lenses or is it going to be eyeglasses? Each one will correct your vision issues. Each one has its share of benefits as well as its share of drawbacks. In the end, it is completely a matter of personal preference, and which vision correction method will suit your lifestyle the best.
For many people, the natural look and performance of the contact lens makes it the logical choice over glasses. Contact lenses are virtually undetectable if you want them to be, and they sit directly on your cornea, so they won't obstruct your view or cause a glare when you're trying to see. Sometimes, the fact that there is distance between the lens of your glasses and your eye creates a distortion in your vision. Glasses also have a tendency to fog up from time to time as humidity and temperature change, while a contact lens will not. Some other points in favour of choosing contacts over eyeglasses are that wearing contact lenses allows other people to see your eyes without any obstruction, contacts won't impair your vision when it rains or snows and you can wear regular sunglasses with contacts without altering your prescription or having to purchase prescription shades.
On the other side of the coin, some people will prefer to wear glasses over contacts. Long time glasses wearers will often stick with their glasses as a matter of habit, while others may not be too fond of the process of putting in contact lenses everyday. Throwing on a pair of glasses is much more convenient than the process of inserting and removing contacts and keeping them in the proper solution when they aren't being used. Another reason some people will choose eyeglasses over contact lenses is the fact that wearing contacts leaves you vulnerable to eye infection. The care and cleaning of contact lenses is very important to prevent infection, and when compared to the ease of wearing glasses, some people just can't be bothered. You can get disposable contacts that may be discarded at the end of each day without having to soak them in solution, but the risk of infection still exists.
That's not to say you don't have to care for your glasses too. Careless handling may scratch your lenses, and they often need to be wiped off several times per day just so you can see clearly. Many people will purchase both contacts and glasses, and wear one for certain occasions and one for others. Some people like to shed their glasses for a more natural look when going out for dinner or a show, while others like to match the frames of their glasses to their wardrobe as a fashion accessory.
The wisest thing to do in the glasses and contacts debate is to listen to your eye doctor and choose whichever one you feel complements your lifestyle the most.

How to Determine Your Face Shape When Choosing Eyeglasses
Choosing glasses that suit the shape of your face is important for both comfort and aesthetics. There are seven basic face shapes to consider when it comes to eyeglasses, and taking the time to determine which shape your face is will help you pick the right pair of glasses for you.
The seven different face shapes are oval, diamond, square, round, triangle, inverted triangle and oblong. To start your calculation, have a basic, passport-style photo of yourself taken by a friend or family member and draw six dots on the picture. Draw two dots on each side of your forehead, two dots on your cheekbones near your eyes and two dots on your jaw line at the level of your mouth.
Next, check the dots to figure out your face shape and help figure out which eyeglasses to choose. For an oval shape, the dots will be farthest apart on your cheekbones and equally spaced on your jaw and forehead, making it longer that it is wide. The diamond shape resembles an oval, but the jaw and forehead dots will be closer together. The dots are farthest apart on the cheekbones of a round face, with the forehead and jaw closer together so the width and height of the face are about the same. For a square face, all three pairs of dots are about the same distance apart, with an angular appearance to the jaw line. On a triangular face, the jaw dots will be farthest apart and the forehead dots closest together. The opposite is true for an inverted triangle, as the forehead dots are farthest apart and jaw dots closest together. Finally, an oblong face has all three pairs roughly equal distance apart like a square, but the face is longer than it is wide.
When it comes time to select your eyeglasses, the best frames for you will usually counterbalance the features of your face. As an example, glasses that have a more angular shape to the frame will look best on a round face. Placing round frames on a round face will only make your face look rounder than it already is.
People with an oval-shaped face have the most freedom when it comes to the shape of the eyeglasses, as virtually any style of frame will work. The goal in choosing glasses to match the shape of your face is balance. Try not to accentuate the parts that are already accentuated, and try not to hide the parts that may not be as noticeable naturally. Someone with a square face shouldn't look for boxy-looking frames that will make his face look even more square, and someone with a diamond shape should try to draw attention away from her wider cheekbones. Ask for advice from the salesperson you are working with, and make your own calculations, so you end up with a pair of glasses that balance out all elements of your face, are comfortable to wear and look great.

Ab Circle Pro - As Seen on TV: Hype or Tripe?
The Ab Circle Pro fitness equipment has been sold globally since circa 2009. It is heavily promoted via television infomercials with a commercial that has now been translated into Arabic, French, Swiss and a variety of other languages around the globe.
Recently I finally gave in to all the 'hype' and decided to test both the product and myself. "This is another bad late night credit card impulse buying decision", I told myself the following day. I had decided to take up the 'iron clad risk free 30 day money back guarantee' in a pure moment of weakness - with a trial like that what did I have to lose right?
I'm a fit 35 year old male. I certainly don't have a massive amount of weight to lose to start with but the strength of the Ab Circle Pro infomercial got me, completely convincing me that within days (not months or years) I could tone up, firm and reveal my sexy six-pack abs.
Now I've been an avid recreational athlete since my college days but 'sexy six-pack abs' have eluded me all these years. Realistically I know that in order to 'reveal' my abdominal muscles it would take a great deal of nutritional care (in my personal case) as opposed to extreme amounts of exercise. I would need to reduce my overall body fat to somewhere less than 8% of my overall body mass.
The Ab Circle Pro boasts the following...
Circular Force TechnologyCombine Cardio and Ab Workouts!NEW - Friction Free TrackEngage your Entire Core!Three levels of resistance so it's perfect for any fitness level!Made with gym quality steel that's built to last a lifetime!Folds for easy storage under the bed or in the closet!
I am now 21 days into my trial and I have to say that despite feeling incredibly silly using this device, it has actually reduced my waist-line. I am getting better results than plain old floor based crunches and compared to the standard crunch using this device is moderately more enjoyable.
For me personally I know I get better results overall from an inverted board or a Roman chair. However I cannot deny that the Ab Circle Pro has managed to firm me up in the waist by what amounts to about an inch.
Will I keep the Ab Circle Pro or return it at the end of the trial? I have decided against returning this particular equipment. I am probably not in need of using it any further but I have had a great offer from my youngest daughter who has also been using it over the last 21 days and she has gotten even better results than mine.
My curiosity has been satisfied and I move on to the next product!

Facing the Trauma of Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are tumours which grow from cells forming the muscle of the uterus. They are also called leiomyoma, myoma, fibromyoma, leiofibromyoma or fibroleiomyoma of the uterus and they can grow on the uterine wall and push out into the bladder, bowel or intestine or can grow within the uterine wall, or even project from the wall of the uterus on a narrow stalk into the uterine cavity. They can be as small as a pea and may go unnoticed but they can cause problems if they grow big.
Some of the symptoms of fibroids can be following:
• Cramps
They are considered to be foreign bodies by the uterus which needs to be expelled. The resulting pressure on the uterine fibroid can cause strong spasms i.e. sudden involuntary muscular contractions.
• Constipation and Pelvic Pain
Normal bowel movements can be hampered when the fibroids press on the colon, causing pain during digestion. They also compress other organs inducing pressure which can be experienced in the form of sharp pains.
• Heavy Menstruation and Vaginal Bleeding
There can be abnormal bleeding. Some women may experience bleeding after a long time of going through menopause which indicates fibroid development.
• Urinary Infections
Fibroids can cause urinary tract infections which may lead to frequent urination or difficulty in urination.
• Abdominal Swelling and Back Pain
A bulging belly that feels hard on touching is a common symptom. Many women with fibroids can appear to be pregnant due to the swelling. In some cases, women with fibroids experience pain in the back or legs.
Besides all these symptoms, they also disturb conception. When it blocks the fallopian tube, fertilization cannot take place. When it grows near the uterine lining, implantation of the fertilized egg can be disrupted, thus causing miscarriages and sometimes women with extremely large growth may not be able to conceive simply because of the size of the fibroid.
These are quite common among women and may a times. A woman is not aware that she is having them. In such cases, they do not cause any symptoms or problems, and they remain unnoticed. Their existence can be hereditary. Conception and intake of oral contraceptives both decrease the likelihood that they will develop. They have not been observed in girls who have not reached puberty and adolescent girls rarely develop them. Some other factors that have been associated with an increased risk of developing fibroids are having the first menstrual period (menarche) before the age of 10, consumption of alcohol (particularly beer), uterine infections and high blood pressure (hypertension).

Purpose of a Chiropractic Adjustment
This may seem like a self-evident topic. Well it's not. The Chiropractic profession cannot even agree on the purpose of an adjustment. There is the fundamental, basic purpose that has been around since 1895 (the inception of Chiropractic) which has not changed, deviated or strayed from its first day. Then there are the fads, the misconceptions, and the attempts to fit nicely into the Medical model.
The most common misconception is that a Chiropractic adjustment is solely for the elimination of symptoms; such as neck pain, back pain, headaches, etc... Although Chiropractic is highly effective at helping to relieve these symptoms, this misconception usually stems from the fact that much of the population does not understand the Nervous System. They believe that nerves only carry messages of pain to the brain. That is obviously not the case. If it was, then there would have to be something other than the brain controlling all of your organs and chemical reactions going on within the body. Simply not so!
The second misconception was perpetuated by early Chiropractors themselves. They actually believed that a Chiropractic adjustment was the cure-all for all diseases. This was in part due to the overwhelming number of "conditions" that seemed to get better under Chiropractic care; and in part due to the frustration directed towards much of the Medical community and their treatment of symptoms, neglecting the "entire person" in many cases. This is obviously just as wrong as the belief that Chiropractic is only for neck and back pain, because many times other things are needed as well to get sick people well. Such as proper nutrition, exercise, rest, and even Medical intervention. Other times, however, a person may have been "sick" for too long for even the body's inborn healing ability to overcome the damage done by years of disease or neglect. Or even for medicine to undo the damage. (i.e.. terminal cancer, people that have had multiple heart attacks, etc).
So what is an adjustment for? Well, when you remove all of the misconceptions and the fads, you are left with one simple fact. A bone in your spine out of place (Vertebral Subluxation), will always have a detrimental effect somewhere in the body due to interference in the Nervous System. This is because structure ALWAYS affects function. Example: If you change the structure of a boat in the water by putting one oar in, the boat will go around in circles. If you put a spoiler on a car, it makes the car more aero-dynamic. If you tie a string around your aorta (the largest artery in your body), blood flow will lessen or stop completely. Structure always changes function. If a vertebral bone is out of place - then it will restrict the communication between the brain and some distant part of the body. ALWAYS! If you remove the interference by removing the bone (vertebrae) from the nerve or spinal cord (this is a Chiropractic adjustment), you once again change the function - in this case improving it. The body's inborn intelligence is once again allowed to control and co-ordinate all bodily functions so that the body can adapt itself to the external and internal environments; survive and prosper.
It comes down to one simple fact; the body will ALWAYS function better without a vertebral subluxation than with a vertebral subluxation. That goes for any and every person with a spine and a Nervous System. Everyone knows that if you do not brush your teeth and get them checked regularly your chances of good oral hygiene are not good. What is more important - your teeth or your spine? When was the last time you had your spine checked?

Health, The Nervous System, And Changing Physiology
What exactly does it mean to be healthy? Are you as healthy as you could be? How important is your Nervous System? What exactly happens each and every time you get adjusted?
First question. Official definition from The World Health Organization: Health is a state of complete physical, emotional, and mental well being. Not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. So what exactly does that mean? Every part of your existence needs to be in order. It's not enough to eat well and exercise. Not enough to get adjusted. Not enough to "feel good" or have no symptoms of pain or any disease. What a concept! I'll bet if you asked anyone walking down the street if they were healthy or not they would judge their health on how they felt overall. Are they or you doing things to help your emotional and mental health? Are you making time for "you?" Are you laughing enough? Are you exercising and eating well? Do you know that the top three causes of death in this country are largely due to lifestyle choices? Heart attacks/stroke, cancer, and diabetes! If you don't take care of your health today you may not be able to get it back tomorrow!
How important is your Nervous System in all of this? When you consider that EVERYTHING in the human experience starts with the Nervous System that should give you a big hint. Whether its your brain telling your heart, lungs and adrenals to kick into overdrive because there is a pit bull chasing you or your eyes or ears sending information to your brain so that it can react appropriately when a bus has lost control and is hurtling at you with its brakes screeching demonstrates that the gate-keeper and master controller is always the brain and the Nervous System. On a less dramatic, more day to day example your Nervous System is always guiding nutrients and oxygen wherever it may be needed in the body. It is producing hormones and chemicals in the right amounts and at the right times for every process in the body.
What exactly happens each and every time you get adjusted? (When the Chiropractor moves the vertebrae off of the nerve.) Think of it on a cellular level if your imagination is that vivid. You walk into the Chiropractor with a Subluxation (bone out of place pinching a nerve). You get adjusted. It feels great. End of story, right? Wrong!!!!! That bone that was just cutting off the vital messages to whatever part of the body (heart, lungs, stomach, etc...) is now back where it belongs. Life is being restored where only a second ago there was none! The cells are happy. They are getting everything they need in the correct amounts at the right times. What do cells do? Other than their programmed function (stomach cells digest, heart cells contract, liver cells detoxify, etc...) they divide, replicate and reproduce themselves. A few seconds ago they were not getting everything they needed. Were they reproducing themselves as healthy, complete cells or as a fraction of what they could and should be? BACK TO THE DEFINITION OF HEALTH! It applies to cells as well. Now they are reproducing as healthier cells. What does that mean for you? For your health? For your life? Chiropractic is not everything! No one thing will ever be as I've shown in this article. But can you see how absolutely vital a healthy Nervous System is to your Health and Wellness?

Chiropractic In A Symptomatic/Medically Dominated World
Did you ever stop to think about what Chiropractic and the care you receive in this office says about you and the way you live your life? If you stop and take a long, hard look at the society around you, you will realize that you are on the outside of the "norm" looking in. The most current studies have shown that only about 10 - 20% of Americans get their spines checked regularly. Does this mean you are wrong? We'll come back to that one later.
Health care in America is very simple. If you feel good or have no overt signs of disease you're doing ok. If by chance you do end up with signs or symptoms don't worry, your television can and will guide you to the drug most appropriate for you. Don't believe me? Watch an hour of TV when you get home and count the drug commercials. While you're at it, pay careful attention to the side effects at the end of the commercial. You know - the ones they sneak in very nonchalantly and quickly at the end. Most people don't even pay attention. That is the whole idea.
Believe it or not, the people with the symptoms are the lucky ones. Yes, you heard right. They are getting advanced warning that their bodies are in trouble. For whatever reason! What about the poor people that all of a sudden suffer a massive heart attack or stroke and never knew it was coming. They "felt fine" up until that moment. Some are fortunate enough to live through it and get a second chance. Some aren't! What about the people that go in for a routine physical
after a few years and the doctor tells them they have cancer? They felt fine up until that point!
Back to the original question. Does the fact that you get your spines checked regularly make you wrong? Does it make you someone that thinks "outside the box"? Maybe yes to a degree on the second question. Is that a problem? Depends how you look at it. Society and public opinion is a funny thing. Even things that we take for granted today as concrete, set in stone laws were at one time or another not believed, ridiculed, persecuted for, or even killed for. How about some examples? The sun revolves around the earth, right? Wrong! Galileo was the first to prove that the earth revolved around the sun. At first he was not believed, and eventually was jailed by the Church for his theories. Today we know the truth! The earth is flat, right? Tell that to Christopher Columbus. Man can't fly! The Wright brothers. Society and medicine used to believe that illness was caused by everything from evil spirits to "bad air". Today we know that there is no one single cause for disease. It is a combination of susceptibility, genetics, exposure, and most importantly how your body resists and fights off the disease. Chiropractic helps with reducing the body's susceptibility to illness and disease by improving your Nervous and Immune systems. For the first fifty years of our profession we were called unscientific and even thrown in jail for "practicing medicine without a medical license because people got well under Chiropractic care." See how things change!
As far as not being in the majority or doing something different goes - good for you. There are always people who have vision and can see beyond the current "wisdom" and prejudices of society and what is popular. Unfortunately, people's gut response to anything new or different is usually negative. Really think about that one and how most people respond to change. If people choose to neglect their health through poor diet, lack of exercise, ignoring Chiropractic care, and poor choices like smoking that is their choice as well. Unfortunately they are the ones that usually end up with Dr. TV telling them what to do next. Congratulations on taking a step towards a healthier you.

Natural Remedies to Help Your Child Fight Colds and Flus
With the school year and fall season in gear, your kids are exposed to more germs and may start coming home with a runny nose and sore throat. What can you do as a parent during this time to help prevent your kids from getting sick, or when they are ill, to alleviate their symptoms and help them get well as quickly as possible?
PREVENTION
The first line of defense is always prevention. Try these tips to keep your kids healthy when others around them are sick.
• Make sure your kids are getting plenty of sleep. This is when their body heals and regenerates the most, so getting adequate rest is vital to staying healthy.
• Try and monitor your kids' stress levels. Stress depresses your immune system, so with increased and sustained levels of stress, there is a greater chance of becoming ill.
• Have them drink plenty of water. Hydrating keeps toxins from building up in your system and helps to flush them out of the body.
• Make sure they are playing or exercising regularly. Moving your body increases your circulation, helping to move blood and lymph along. This allows your white blood cells to circulate and fight germs better. Increasing blood flow also flushes toxins away from muscles and organs, and sweating from exercise or play also removes toxins through the skin.
• Decrease sugar in the diet. Limit processed foods, pastries, candies, etc. as sugar also impairs the immune system and your overall ability to fight colds and flus.
THE ONSET OF A COLD OR FLU
Your child comes home feeling a little fatigued and is starting to get congested. What are some things for keeping their illness at bay and speeding up the healing process?
• Have your child continue to drink more water and get plenty of rest. These are still the best ways to help support our body's natural defenses and give our body a greater opportunity to fight off any infections.
• Take out sugar completely and decrease mucus-producing foods, such as dairy, citrus, and bananas. This will lessen the load on the immune system and prevent any congestion from becoming worse.
• Echinacea and elderberry are some great herbs that can help boost the immune system and combat upper respiratory infections. The gylcerite forms of these herbs are also tasty for children.
• Other herbs that are warming and good for colds and congestion include cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and yarrow. They can increase circulation and help stimulate body heat.
• The wet sock treatment is very helpful for increasing circulation and decreasing congestion in the head, throat, and chest. It also helps with sleep and stimulates the immune system (procedure for a wet sock treatment found below).
THE FULL-BLOWN COLD OR FLU
Your child now has a full-blown cold or flu. They are tired, congested, have a cough, and are running a fever. What are some extra things or treatments you can add to relieve symptoms?
• The same treatments as above can be continued for supporting the immune system.
• Chamomile tea is wonderful for children because it relaxes them so they can sleep while also helping to clear coughs and congestion and decreasing fever.
• To increase drainage and help relieve congestion, a number of things can help:
o Taking horehound and mullein internally are good for clearing bronchial congestion by stimulating coughs. Mullein is also an antimicrobial to help fight infections.
o Thyme and Eucalyptus essential oils can be added to 1 ounce of olive oil to rub behind the ears, down the neck, and on the chest before your child goes to bed or upon waking. The essential oils can also be added to steam showers or a big basin of hot water for your child to inhale to relieve the congestion.
• A mustard pack is also great for a congested chest (procedure for a mustard pack found below).
• For a dry, spasmodic cough, hyssop and black cherry are great antitussives for children. Soothing throat herbs for dry coughs also include mullein and marshmallow root.
Extended immune support
For kids that may have multiple respiratory infections throughout fall or winter, other supplements to support the immune system can be added.
• Vitamin C and zinc stimulate the immune system and help to both prevent and reduce the duration of colds.
• Probiotics not only help with gut health, but they also boost our immunity.
• Fish oil also helps modulate the immune system and decreases inflammation.
The most important factors for preventing illnesses still center around the basics of rest, hydration, and getting the right nutrients. If your children get these basics, they will be less likely to become sick, but if they do get sick, these natural treatments can help to ease their symptoms as well as expedite their healing process.

Right before bed, soak feet in hot water for 5-10 minutes or take a hot shower/bath. Wring out cotton socks and put on feet. Put dry wool socks over the cotton socks, and go to bed with socks on.

- 2 pieces of thin cloth (muslin is best or old cut-up T-shirt)
- 1 tbsp dry mustard powder
- Flour (adult: 4tbsp, child: 8 tbsp, infant: 12 tbsp)
- Hot water
Mix flour and mustard. Add enough hot water to make a medium thin paste. About Urgent Care
Are you sick and tired of waiting around at the emergency room during your most time of need? Urgent care centers can help to take care of you better. They are smaller facilities that work harder to get your minor problems fixed quickly.
Emergency rooms can have you come in and fill out excessive forms just to have you wait around for hours in the waiting room until you finally upgrade to a doctor's office where you spend more time waiting. Having a broken bone during this time can be painful and might even cause damage that can be prevented by seeing a doctor at a smaller office.
At one of these places they take care of all your immediate smaller needs. Broken bones can be treated same day without an appointment. You come in, they'll see you fairly quickly and have you out in a timely fashion. They don't want patients sitting around in discomfort for longer than they have to.
These centers take care of other needs such as cold/flu cures and shots. When that time comes around you are going to want a flu shot to try and prevent getting a virus that can destroy your work week or your child's schooling schedule. You can stay on track by running in and out of an urgent care facility.
Getting an appointment with your family doctor might take a little pre planning and scheduling. Making an appointment for something so small can just be annoying. You might just want to walk in to an urgent care place and be out of there within the hour.
They also take care of cuts and scrapes. If you have been injured and need some minor stitches, an urgent care center can have you stitched up in no time. At an emergency room you will have to wait around of course but at an urgent care center they may be able to see you right away.
The facilities are fully staffed and have someone on call always for helping you as fast as possible. The waits are much shorter and the people are much more friendly and personal. They actually care about you and your problems and practice good communication skills with everyone that walks in to their establishment.
These care facilities are your best bet for minor problems. People have reported better experiences at care facilities with services geared toward your specific needs and are not distracted by larger more important services.

Urgent Care Centers Info
Urgent care centers were founded in the 1970s and have been developed over the years to what they are today. Now, they are a place where you can go for your minor emergencies for a flat fee and be treated almost immediately. They are comparable to an emergency room only they have much faster services because the services they provide are for quick and minor problems.
This type of center is fully staffed with a team of skilled professional doctors that are quick at what they do. They take in patients of minor level needs up to minor burns, stitches and bone breaks so everyone can get treated quickly and get out quickly.
The purpose of these facilities is to treat everyone fairly and as quickly as possible. That is why they don't take major problems like internal bleeding and strokes. Problems like that take precedence at emergency rooms and that is why the people of lesser concern are overlooked for so long. The doctors are busy taking care of major emergencies first. This is why everyone at the emergency room with minor injuries should know about urgent care centers.
If you have thrown your back out and need a prescription, the places are staffed with real professional doctors that can take care of that for you. You can get medication for the pain by coming in and seeing a chiropractor. They may be able to help with stretches and icing.
They can help with skin conditions like dry skin, acne and poison ivy. If you wanted to make an appointment for that it will help you wait a shorter amount of time still because of course they do treat minor emergencies like animal bites and sprains which might be more of an emergency.
They do treatments for breathing and various illnesses such as strep throat and respiratory infections. These things can be contagious so they will want to be treated as quickly as possible as to not infect other patients waiting in the waiting room too. Vaccinations are available for preventing these and other viruses such as hepatitis and tetanus. You can walk in for these or make an appointment but it shouldn't take long for this at all.
Depending on the department, urgent care facilities are not over packed because not too many people have caught on to places like these. Many people are still waiting around in the waiting room of the ER. Your goals will be met efficiently and the services will be satisfactory at an urgent care center.

Health and Wellness Jobs For Everybody
In my last article, I brought up work ethic.
Being an adult, you need a great work ethic to be successful at nearly anything, including health and fitness. So how will you develop a health and fitness work ethic? Begin a career in health. With this, I don't mean leave your job and become a nutritionist or fitness instructor. I mean take on a part-time job of eating healthy and working out and keep it up. Think about it... if we all had health and wellness jobs, would obesity exist? I know this might sound somewhat crazy, but I have developed this mindset over the last couple of years and it works.
How does it work?
One word. Accountability. When you've got a job, you happen to be kept accountable for your effort, generally and at a minimum, showing up and doing what you must do. How frequently does the average Joe compromise doing things he enjoys including seeing close friends or watching TV because he has to go to work? Probably weekly. But how often does he sacrifice these same things for a training session? Probably never. If you don't show up to work, you'll get let go. The good news is that people can't get let go from their self-made health and wellness jobs. The not so good news is that this will make it even more challenging to hold themselves accountable and remain motivated.
In our careers, we're motivated by money.
I'm sorry to point out the obvious, but if everybody was a billionaire, what percentage of us would actually continue in our jobs? With the exception of people who absolutely love their career, I'd venture to say no one. People work to provide for themselves and for their households. They need money in order to achieve this. If they fail to accomplish this, they and their loved ones will suffer. This is quite strong motivation for anyone. Think about that for a minute. "If I don't go to work, my family and I will suffer." No wonder many people stay in jobs they can't stand.
Clearly, motivation is key for individuals to remain in their jobs.
So how does one get motivated for a job that doesn't pay money? Well guess what? Remember that thought that pops up with your real job? "If I don't go to work, my loved ones and I will suffer." This applies to your second job in health and fitness as well. It's just not as noticeable because there may not be immediate repercussions. However, think about the following facts I picked up from an episode of The Biggest Loser a couple of years ago:
• Overweight individuals pay $500 - $1,000 more on medical insurance each year
• On average, obese people make $7,000 less per year than their peers
• Americans spend $4.4 billion each year on gastric bypass surgery
• Americans spend $147 billion annually on obesity related health problems
• The average person will save $1 million over four decades by going from obese to their ideal weight
Therefore you may not necessarily make money from your wellness job. But you will save a lot of money. And you know what people say regarding a penny saved... Not enough motivation? How about this? Obesity cuts the average lifespan by two to four years and by as much as eight to ten years for those people who are extremely obese. Needless to say, the quality of life of obese people will be much lower than it is for non-obese people. It's not going to be easy to care for all your family members if you're in a hospital bed.
I'm not trying to freak anyone out.
I just want to push home the message that your part-time job as a healthy, fit individual is as vital, if not more so, than your full-time job. In fact, if your full-time occupation is a sedentary one, your part-time job will become even more important. I think it's important to shed some light on this because the fact is with no concrete benefit or strong motivating factors, people will not take action. The consequences of obesity and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle are significant, however are not at the forefront of people's immediate focus.
This is a breakdown of my 15 to 20-hour weekly part-time job of being fit and healthy:
• 8 hours per week - cooking and preparing healthful meals, doing dishes
• 3 - 4 hours per week - resistance training
• 3 - 4 hours per week - high-intensity cardio and/or soccer
• 1 - 2 hours per week - low-intensity aerobic exercise (walking)
Just like it's imperative that you have a work-life balance in your full-time job, it's important to achieve a balance with your part-time job in health and fitness. You don't want to devote 60 hours a week and overtrain, however, you don't want to do nothing either. My friends like to go out a lot. During the week, I'll opt out of happy hour quite frequently in order to stay in and get in a high-quality training session and meal because once again, I treat this as my job. It helps me stay lean and healthy. On the weekends, I'll indulge and party along with them because it's also important to have fun and enjoy life. I'd love to hear comments on your weekly routine. Do the men and women you know take on part-time health and wellness jobs?
